Handling Clients or Bosses Who Push Too Hard

the power of no: boundaries

Let’s chat about something that’s so tricky, and so important for maintaining our sanity and joy in the business world: setting boundaries. Whether you’re dealing with a client or a boss who expects you to work after hours or constantly pushes for more than what was agreed upon, it’s time to stand firm and protect your time and energy. Here’s how we can do it:

Know Your Worth

First off, remember that your time is valuable. Your personal time is for rest, family, hobbies, and just plain living. Acknowledging this is the foundation for setting strong boundaries.

Communicate Clearly

Have a straightforward conversation with your client or boss about your availability. Use “I” statements to express your needs. For example, “I need to maintain specific work hours to ensure I’m delivering my best work.” Clear communication sets the stage for respect and understanding.

Keep It in Writing

Whenever possible, add your boundaries to your contracts. Personally, adding specific work hours and response times to my contracts has added immense value. It gives you something concrete to point to if boundaries are pushed. It’s a game-changer.

Use Technology Wisely

Set up automatic email replies outside of work hours to manage expectations. Use scheduling tools to share your availability. This helps reinforce your boundaries without constant reminders.

Be Consistent

Consistency is key. If you’ve set a boundary, stick to it. It might be tough initially, but maintaining consistency ensures your boundaries are respected.

Offer Solutions

If work needs to be done urgently, offer solutions that respect your boundaries. For example, suggest an earlier deadline or provide guidelines for what can be handled in your absence. This shows your commitment without compromising your limits.

Practice Self-Care

Take care of yourself. Engage in activities that recharge you—whether that’s reading, walking, yoga, or just enjoying your favorite series. The more balanced you feel, the easier it is to enforce your boundaries.

Reflect and Adjust

Regularly reflect on how your boundaries are working. Are they respected? Are you feeling more balanced? Adjust as needed. The goal is to create a balance that works for you and supports your well-being.

Setting boundaries isn’t about creating barriers; it’s about defining your personal space to thrive both personally and professionally. 💛
